Will I get an actual .gif file?
Yes. We convert Twitter's MP4 back into a real animated GIF on our server. It opens and loops in any image viewer. The MP4 original is offered alongside if you prefer the smaller file.
Why does Twitter store GIFs as MP4?
MP4 files are far smaller than GIFs at the same visual quality — a 5-second GIF can be 10 MB while the MP4 is under 1 MB — so X converts uploads for faster loading.

What are the GIF conversion limits?
